Hello. My name is Monte Parker. I created this site about the Leadership and Legacy of Jackie Robinson. The reason I chose Jackie Robinson is because he was a great athlete, a great man and a proud African-American. I am also an African American, but that isn't the only reason why I chose him. The main reason was because of the Movie "42", a biography released in 2012 that depicted Jackie Robinson's life. This is one of my favorite movies.
Who is Jackie Robinson?
Jack Roosevelt Robinson was an African American born on December 31, 1919 in Cairo,Georgia. The original person to inspire Jackie Robinson to take on athletics was his older brother Matthew Robinson. His brother was also a world-class athlete who won the silver medal in the 200 meter dash in the Berlin Olympics of 1936.
Jackie went to the University of Carolina and he was the first of the College's students to win varsity letters in four sports, but he was forced to leave because of his financial hardships.
He moved to Honolulu, Hawaii after his college years and played semi-professional football with the Honolulu Bears, but that was also cut short on account of World War II. For two years he was a second lieutenant in the United States Army. He was later arrested because he didn't want to give up his seat on the bus, but was later let out because of his excellent reputation this paved the road to his success in baseball.
In 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first black player to officially play in the major leagues in modern times. He played with the Brooklyn Dodgers and was also named Rookie of the Year.
